May 26, 1987 – In Game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, Detroit Pistons forward Adrian Dantley scored 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting in a heartbreaking 108-107 loss to the Boston Celtics. Dantley did the bulk of his damage in the game’s first three quarters, ceding offensive control to a hot-handed Vinnie Johnson in the fourth. Dantley watched helplessly from the sideline as the Celtics pulled off one of the most significant plays in NBA history down the stretch:

Dantley averaged 23.6 points per game over the course of the seven-game series. His averaged likely would have topped 25 had he not been knocked unconscious and wheeled away on a stretcher in Game 7 (which the Pistons also lost).
